Basic Computer Classes

These basic computer classes are open to anyone wanting to learn more and be more efficient in using computers.  You may sign up for as many as interest you.  Call the library (796-2642) for more information.

Internet Basics
September 25, 2010, 9:00 am to noon. Learn how to navigate the Internet using your browser menus and tool bars. Access Web sites by typing in a Web address or using search engines, directories or other starter points.  Cost $1
Must pre-register.

E-Mail for Beginners
October 9, 2010, 9:00 am to noon.
Learn how to register for and use free Web-based e-mail services and how to compose, read, reply to, save and forward e-mail. Cost $1 Must pre-register.

Basic Computer Skills
October 23, 2010, 9:00 am to noon. Brush up on existing mouse and keyboard skills and learn the basics of word processing, including simple formatting, saving and printing documents. Cost $1 Must pre-register.

Understanding and creating Files and Folders
November 6, 2010, 9:00 am to noon. Learn to create, name, save, find and manage files and folders within Windows.    Cost $1 Must pre-register.

Downloading Made Easy
November 13, 2010, 9:00 am to noon. Learn how to download audio books, pictures, games, plug-Ins, updates and other software programs from the Internet and protect your computer from viruses, adware and spyware.
Cost $1 Must pre-register.

Meet the Computer for Seniors (Computer Skills I) September 21, 2010,  1-3 p.m.  Learn the basics of computing including how to use the mouse and keyboard.
Cost $1 Must pre-register

Meet the Computer for Seniors (Computer Skills II) September 28, 2010, 1 to 3 pm - Learn to identify common Windows elements, use the taskbar, start up menus and program menus, and explore control panel settings, including various display options.  Cost $1 Must pre-register.

Find out about the basics of digital imaging, including megapixels, picture formats and camera types. Plus, learn to use Adobe Elements software application for basic image manipulation, organization and making backup CDs of your photos. Cost $5 Must pre-register

Summer Tweens and Teens Computer/Digital Camera Classes

Date/Time: Thursday afternoons; 2-4 p.m.; 6 weeks starting June 3
Instructor: Sue Latham
Location: upstairs computer lab, except as noted
Cost: Free; must register in advance

Special computer programming for 5th graders through high school:  fun on computers.  These programs will be held for 6 weeks on Thursday afternoons starting June 3 from 2-4 p.m. @ the library except as noted.  The programs are free - all you have to do is sign up in advance.
June 3 - Surfing the Web Safely;
June 10 - Surfing locations around the world using Google Earth;
June 17 - meet at Proctor Park to learn the basics of digital photography and take pictures using the library’s digital cameras;
June 24 - learn to use digital editing software;
July 1 - begin planning a poster project using your own digital pictures;
July 8 - study layout and design and print the final copy of your project.


Answering Your Online Genealogy Questions

Date/Time: Saturday, March 27 from 10 a.m. - noon

Session repeated on Tuesday, April 20 from 2-4 p.m. and Tuesday, May 18 from 7-9 p.m.


Basic Crochet

Date/Time: Wednesday, March 10 from 2-4 p.m.
Location: Second Floor Wood Place Library
Cost: $1.00 for class; $4.00 for supplies; preregistration required

Learn 4 basic crochet stitches:  chain, single crochet, double crochet and triple crochet.  
You may bring your own supplies if you wish: cotton crochet yarn and size "J" crochet hook.

This class will be repeated on Wednesday, April 7 from 7-9 p.m. and Saturday, May 1 from 10 a.m. till noon.


Building a Slide Show

Date/Time: Saturday, March 20 from 10 a.m. to noon
Instructor: Sue Latham
Location: Second Floor Computer Lab
Cost: $1.00; must preregister

Using Microsoft Movie Maker, participants will use their own photos, DVD and music (be sure to bring to class) to produce a slide show.

This workshop will be repeated on Tuesday, April 13 from 2-4 p.m. and Tuesday, May 11 from 7-9 p.m.


Introduction to Computers

Date/Time: Saturday, March 6 from 10 a.m. to noon

Location: Second Floor of Wood Place Public Library
Cost: $1 per person, per class; must pre-register

This is the class to take if you have never turned on a computer, or if you aren’t very familiar with using a computer. It will cover basic information on how to use a computer.  Once you learn the basics, computers can simplify many aspects of your life.

This class will be repeated on Tuesday, April 27 from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday, May 25 from 2-4 p.m.


Introduction to Microsoft Office

Date/Time: Tuesday, March 9 from 7-9 p.m.

Cost: $1.00 Must preregister

This is a class for beginners that will give an overview of the functions of Microsoft Office and how it can be used for a variety of purposes.

This class will be repeated Saturday, April 10 from 10 a.m. till noon and Tuesday, May 18 from 2-4 p.m. and Tuesday, May 18 from 2-4 p.m.


Scrapbooking on the Computer

Date/Time: Tuesday, March 16 from 2-4 p.m.

Cost: $1.00 plus cost of printing; preregistration required

This workshop covers how to make scrapbooking pages on a computer.

This class will be repeated on Saturday, April 3 from 10 a.m. to noon and Tuesday, May 25 from 7-9 p.m.


Self Improvment with Hypnosis

Instructor: Wayne Girdner

Wayne Girdner, Certified Hypnotherapist and author of The Truth about Hypnosis will once again lead a hypnotherapy session at the Wood Place Public Library.

Wayne has been involved in hypnosis, motivation, and self-improvement systems since 1975. The hypnotherapy session that Wayne will be bringing to Wood Place Library is:

Break the Smoking Habit with Hypnosis: Most people stop after one session, however, if you need a follow-up, there will be no charge.
Date and Time: Sat. November 7, 2009 starting at 11 a.m.  Location: Upstairs at the Wood Place Public Library
Cost: $20

The hypnotherapy session will include a CD that can be used to allow for added support once the session is completed.

Registration in advance is required in order to allow for enough take home CDs for all participants.


Beginning Computers

Date/Time: Mondays; September 21 to October 12 from 6 to 8 PM
Instructor: ReVea Edwards
Location: Burger Computer Lab
Cost: $20

Students will learn the general operating functions of a computer, how to set and change various things including the screensaver and desktop background; how to set up a filing system; how to properly shut down a computer, the various terms and what they mean in reference to a pc; basic keyboarding; and a slight introduction to the Internet.


Digital Photography and the Computer

Learning Express Workshop

Date/Time: Wednesday, October 7, 2009 @ 6:00 p.m.

A Learning Express Library workshop will be held Wednesday October 7 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. also in the main library.  This on-line resource is designed to help people succeed on the tests they must pass to gain citizenship, improve their testing skills or to further their education or career. Over 300 online academic and licensing practice tests including SAT, ACT, GRE, LSAT, Advanced Placement, civil service, military, real estate, law enforcement, citizenship, TOEFL, ESL and basic skills for elementary, middle and high school skills improvement and much more. Test preparation materials span ages from elementary through adult. This testing resource also provides instant scoring and customized feedback.

Net Smartz Workshop

Visit the library on Wednesday, September 23 for a FREE informative internet safety workshop.  If you have concerns about internet safety for your children and/or yourself, you’ll want to attend this workshop that starts at 6:00 p.m. in the main library.  The library technology coordinator, Sue Latham and a representative from local law enforcement will be on hand to  review  the MoreNet resource: NetSmartz Workshop and answer all your internet related questions.
The NetSmartz Workshop® is an interactive, educational safety resource from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children® and Boys & Girls Clubs of America for children (ages 5-17), parents, guardians, educators and law enforcement that uses age-appropriate, 3-D activities to teach children how to stay safer on the Internet.
